Assam Relief Appeal

The Crisis

The recent spate of large-scale riots in Assam, according to conservative estimates, has claimed 53 lives and displaced over 300,000 victims. Men, women and children have been killed, their schools and houses are burnt.

IAHV’s Intervention

IAHV volunteers are currently working to restore the lives of the victims in the affected areas. Our response involves providing immediate material aid at our relief camps, releasing trauma through relief workshops and restoring hope. As a short term rehabilitation plan, we aim at fostering personal responsibility of individuals through service and mentorship programs conducted by community volunteers that empower self-reliance.

Renowned spiritual leader and founder of IAHV, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, on Wednesday visited the riot-hit districts of Chirang and Kokrajhar in Assam with the objective of healing the wounds of the recent clashes. He visited several relief camps and interacted with the inmates.

Soon after his arrival from Guwahati, Sri Sri visited the relief camp at Kajalgaon Higher Secondary School in Chirang district. Addressing a large gathering of Bodo inmates, he advised them to face the tragedy with courage and prepare to reclaim their life.

He urged them to go back to the villages with the feeling of belongingness. “It’s really painful that such a tragedy has happened in our country,” he said adding that The Art of Living and IAHV are there with them.
