Gujarat Earthquake, India, 26th January, 2001


A deadly earthquake struck Gujarat on 26th January 2001 at around 8.45am. The Kutch region was the most affected area with thousands killed and hundreds of houses razed to the ground. As in the case of any other human calamities, IAHV and it's sister organization the A deadly earthquake struck Gujarat on 26th January 2001 at around 8.45am.

The Kutch region was the most affected area with thousands killed and hundred of houses razed to the ground. As in the case of any other human calamities, IAHV and it's sister organization the Art of Living Foundation swung into action immediately. By 10am, our volunteers had constituted a rescue and rehabilitation team.


IAHV's response:

  • Provision of food, shelter and other basic necessities;
  • Trauma counseling to more than 100,000 people including children in more than 120 villages;
  • Establishment of temporary schools and 2 permanent schools; and,
  • Adoption of one village (Nana Dahisara) for its complete rehabilitation.
