Kumudavathi River Rejuvenation

IAHV has taken up the project to rejuvenate Kumudvathi River, a tributary of the Arkavathi river, originating from the sacred hills of Shivagange in Karnataka, India.

Kumudvathi River was supplying 30% of drinking water to Bangalore city till two decades ago. Due to various reasons like massive deforestation in the river basin, soil erosion, encroachments of water bodies, unbridled eucalyptus plantations etc. the river Kumudvathi has degraded in the last two decades and the Tippagondana Halli reservoir is no more receiving adequate water from the river. A scientific study was made to devise a methodology for rejuvenation of the river by using geomorphology, geohydrology by use of satellite imaging procedures. The action plan in this regard is taken up for implementation by a group of water resource specialists, farmers in the river basin, and volunteers of IAHV-Art of Living.

Implementation of Action Program under Kumudvathi River Rejuvenation Project was commenced in 2013. Following Districts & Talukas are covered during this period:

The major works done in these two districts so far are given below:

  • 20 Traditional step wells have been de-silted.
  • 285 Boulder checks constructed.
  • 285 Recharge wells have been constructed.
  • 29 Recharge Bore Wells have been constructed..
  • 36 Water Pools have been constructed.
  • 23,000 saplings have been planted and are being maintained.
  • Positive impact of the rejuvenating activities is already visible in few villages with 5 to 10ft of water standing in open wells and step wells within one summer which were otherwise dry.

CSR with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Phase I

IAHV in partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under the CSR 2014/15 Plan has taken up ground water rejuvenation activities in Tavarekere Miniwatershed of Kumudvathi River Basin, comprising many villages in Manne, Thyamagondalu, Kodigehalli and Doddabele Gram Panchayats. Following works have been done:

  • 34 Boulder Checks constructed
  • 34 Recharge Wells constructed
  • 7 Recharge Borewells constructed
  • 10 Water Pools constructed
  • 5,000 Saplings Planted

Phase II

Following the success of Phase I, IAHV partnered with HAL to complete rejuvenation activities in the Miniwatersheds of Tyamagondlu and Mondigere comprising of villages in Dodabele, Kodigehalli, Tyamagondlu, Kalalagatta, Hasiruvalli, Budihal, Kuluvanahalli, Shivagange Gram Panchayats. Following works have been done:

  • 168 Boulder Checks constructed
  • 168 Recharge Wells constructed
  • 20 Recharge Borewells constructed
  • 25 Water Pools constructed
  • 10,000 Saplings Planted

Report on Kumudavathi River Rejuvenation under CSR with HAL, Phase II

CSR with Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Private Limited
IAHV in partnership with Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Private Limited (RBEI) under the CSR 2014/15 Plan has taken up ground water rejuvenation activities in Hemapura Miniwatershed of Kumudvathi River Basin in two phases. In phase 1, works across 17 villages were taken up. Following works have been done:

  • 30 Boulder Checks constructed
  • 30 Recharge Wells constructed

In phase 2, works in 4 more villages were taken up. Following works have been done:

  • 8 Boulder Checks constructed
  • 15 Recharge Wells constructed
  • 1 Water Pool constructed
  • 2 Recharge Borewells  constructed

Seed Grant with Intel
IAHV in partnership with Intel under the Seed Grant 2014/15 Plan has taken up ground water rejuvenation activities in Tavarekere Miniwatershed of Kumudvathi River Basin in Doddabele village. Following works have been done:

  • 4 Boulder Check constructed
  • 4 Recharge Well constructed
  • 100 Saplings Planted

Volunteer Engagement Program with Intel
IAHV in partnership with Intel under Volunteer Engagement Program, Intel employees from Bengaluru participated in

  • Plantation of 600 Saplings
  • Sowing of 50 Kgs of Pongemia seeds
  • Maintenance works of plantation in 30 acres
